Seriously...just watch the original. |
Although it tries to pay homage to the original classic, with multiple references, the end result was a film that felt rushed and out of touch with reality. The story just does not work as well today as it did pre-social media. The chemistry between Derbez and Faris is non-existent and all attempts of romance felt forced. The portrayal of what a "poor" family looks and lives like was uninformed and came off as more lower-middle-class to me. I'm supposed to believe that a single mother with three kids can afford such a nice house, nice clothing, and nice decor...while attending college and working at the same time? Sure, she could have gotten very lucky, but I just found it unbelievable. The humor has a few moments, but mostly falls flat and overall the film just lacks the charm of its predecessor. My advice? Just watch the 1987 original, this remake was unnecessary.
